Professor of Agroindustry Chemistry of Tanjungpura University, Usman Thamrin said the consistent policies needed to improve the competitiveness of biodiesel compared to fossil energy.

Usman Thamrin, at the international seminar "Trans Borneo Biodiesel Expedition 2010" in Pontianak, said that if there is no policy, will always get the price of biodiesel more expensive than fossil energy.

Such a liability policy is pollution-free vehicles. Whereas, if vehicle using fossil fuels is difficult to achieve pollution-free category. While biodiesel is more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels.

Usman Thamrin said that the process of producing biodiesel is more complicated and expensive long lead.

He said for fossil fuels, only do to produce the kinds of fuel such as gasoline 'premium'.

The process of producing biodiesel using crude palm oil raw materials needed six stages.

He is grateful that government made the difference between biodiesel and diesel fuel getting closer.

The difference is vanishingly small. Subsidies are also getting reduced.

The result of tests on biodiesel from oil palm raw material in West Kalimantan showed 1 liter can cover a distance of 10 kilometers by the Daihatsu Taft 1980s car.

Thamrin Usman inaugurated as Professor of the year 2010 on 17 February.

He said the use of "sludge oil" as a byproduct or waste from crude palm oil extraction process capable of reducing production cost of biodiesel to be a 30% cheaper than palm oil.

Thamrin Usman presented his scientific oration titled "Development of 'Green Energy' Biodiesel as Alternative Solutions In West Kalimantan" during the inauguration.

He and several colleagues conducted a research synthesis of biodiesel from palm oil sludge of raw materials with the aid of catalytic para-toulen sulphonic acid (pTSA) which impregnated on solid matrix of kaolinite.
